I have worked in tech (coder) professionally for over a decade and I have been working with tech for over 20 years. Needless to say, I have built some skills up over the years and now I work for a MAJOR tech company that for obvious reasons I will not state here.
I LOVED my job. It took me out of poverty and it helped me put my kids in college and to enhance my life in ways I could have never imagined when I got started all of those years ago. I found the work satisfying and I often felt like a WIZARD in a digital world. If people needed something done right, they had to approach me and I would make their ideas come to life.
TODAY is another story. I have watched countless peers lose their jobs with little or no notice and at the same time I have watched my job turn into something I never expected. Frankly, I am often just a meat bag that AI uses to make sure the code it wrote works and is secure and maintainable.
Where before I was given time to explore options and learn new techniques, now I just get my estimates cut in half and operations tells me to just “use AI” to speed up the work. I am no longer learning. Now I just find a solution that “works” and move on to the next unreasonable deadline as fast as possible.
Honestly, my job sucks now. The ONLY good part is, for now, I still have it. For now, I can continue to feed my family but the day where these skills I have built for over 20 years will be worthless is coming and I don’t know what the means for my family. I watched AI go from a TOY to a TOOL and now what I see is TERRIFYING. Can I even be retrained to do something else at this age? If skilled workers with decades of experience are at risk, what does that mean for the bulk of humanity?
